What is Hempcrete?
Hempcrete is a bio-composite insulation made by mixing hemp hurd with a lime-based binder and water. It is not structural. It is an infill material that goes between framing members to insulate, regulate moisture, and control temperature naturally. It has been used in Europe for decades and is now recognized in US building codes.

Why Hempcrete
Performance That Matters
Carbon Negative
Hemp absorbs CO₂ as it grows. The lime binder continues absorbing CO₂ as it cures. A hempcrete wall actively sequesters carbon for decades after installation.
Breathable Walls
Hempcrete is vapor-permeable. It absorbs and releases moisture naturally, preventing mold and condensation without vapor barriers.
Thermal Mass
Hempcrete stores and slowly releases heat, keeping interiors comfortable without the energy spikes of conventional insulation. Warm in winter, cool in summer.
Fire Resistant
Hempcrete does not burn easily. It chars slowly without producing toxic fumes. Tested to ASTM E84 standards with ignition temperatures above 500°F.
No Toxic Materials
No formaldehyde, no VOCs, no spray foam chemicals. Just hemp, lime, and water. Safe for the people building it and the people living in it.
Pest Resistant
The high pH of lime makes hempcrete naturally resistant to insects, rodents, and mold. No chemical treatments needed.

Now in the Building Code
The 2024 International Residential Code includes Appendix BL for hemp-lime (hempcrete) construction. This covers non-structural biocomposite insulation infill for one and two family dwellings and townhouses. Pennsylvania is in its adoption cycle. Hempcrete is no longer experimental. It is code-recognized.
